Why Choose Africa Travel Co?
Below are the reasons why you will get the best overland experience with Us.
African Based Company
It is important to choose a company that is based in the countries you plan to travel through. Being an African based company means we are very “hands-on” with what is happening in and around southern and eastern Africa and we can provide comprehensive local back up to all our operations. We are also a registered company in five of the ten counties we travel through.
We employ local people as crew on the road and to operate our regional offices; thus contributing to the local economy of the countries we operate in. Travelling with knowledgeable African crew also provides our clients with a true insight into the African culture and environment.
Our Offices
With three operational bases in Africa, we are the only overland company to offer such a comprehensive support system. Our offices are situated in Cape Town, South Africa; Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Nairobi, Kenya.
South Africa, Cape Town: This is our main reservations office and offers a full booking and information service to our clients and agents. Our highly experienced reservations team will answer all your questions and help you through every stage of your booking.
Kenya, Nairobi: This is a workshop specialising in flights and packages in and around East Africa. Our team has extensive knowledge of East Africa and will gladly recommend a trip that suits your budget and requirements.
Our Itineraries
Over the years we have closely developed the routes we travel on throughout Africa. Our trips begin in the major cities to connect to flights and are very well set out to cover all the major highlights and much, much more. Our trips are well-paced, with time in destinations to explore or relax away from the road. Our trips range between 5 days to 56 days in length, which means Africa Travel Co. can offer something for every adventure traveller. We also have over 60 different options to choose from leaving you with a variety of experiences and adventures to enjoy.
Value for Money and More
Our trips offer excellent value for money, without giving away any quality. We also include your arrival transfer and pre-trip night’s accommodation so you don’t have to worry about where you’ll sleep, or how to get to the departure point for your safari. We also offer a range of Discounts to choose from including return client discounts for those who want to discover more; ISIC student card discounts for ISIC members (& partners); Kids under 12 on a family departure pay less; 4 or more travellers booking onto their trip together save; early birds booking 6 months or more in advance get a great discount.
No other company offers discounts and extra trips such as these, making your overland adventure with Africa Travel Co. especially good value for money.
Our Crew
The crew on any trip you book, anywhere in the world, is one of the most important requirements of making your trip enjoyable. We believe having three crew members; the Trip Leader, the Driver and the Safari Cook, on most of our trips, is a big bonus on an overland adventure through Africa. Our Trip Leaders are often ex-passengers who have developed a passion for Africa. They are all trained “on the road” prior to leading a trip and have a good knowledge of the counties we travel through.
Their leadership and organisational skills will ensure the smooth running of your trip. Most of our loyal Drivers and Safari Cooks are African and have been with us for many years; some since we started over 20 years ago. Our Drivers have a lot of experience driving overland trucks and come from a strong mechanical background. Your safety is their top priority. Our trips are renowned for their delicious meals.
There is nothing better than sitting around a campfire, after a day of travelling, to a scrumptious dinner that has been prepared by one of our local Safari Cooks. Our crew are there to share their passion for Africa with you. They very much take part in the daily happenings on your trip and will show you the time of your life when travelling with us!
Our Workshops
Each of our operational bases has depots with fully functional workshops, complete with qualified mechanics. This is where our vehicles are serviced before and after each trip. All vehicles and equipment are checked and cleaned, which ensures everything is ready to go before a trip departs.
Trip In Both Directions
Most of our trips operate in both a north and a southbound direction, offering you the flexibility to fly into the most convenient departure point. This also means that if a southbound trip is fully booked you can enquire about the same trip in a northbound direction. With our frequent guaranteed departure dates there definitely is no shortage of choice of how, and from where, to travel with us.
Competitive Prices
Because Africa Travel Co. runs our fleet of vehicles, and all our operations are African based, our prices are very competitive. When you compare our trip price with other companies, you will see that you get what you pay for in terms of what we guarantee. Most of our prices are in a tiered structure with a once-off tour price paid to your agent, and a second local payment made in US Dollars cash at the pre-departure meeting. This tiered system is in place to save you money as the US$ local payment goes directly toward paying for entry fees, food supplies, National Park fees and other on-trip expenses, thereby avoiding attracting commissions or exchange fees. There are no hidden costs and you will be happy to know once we set our trip prices they are guaranteed (only local payment amounts may sometimes increase dependant on local factors).
We have compiled a comprehensive list of Optional Activities to do before, during and after your trip so that you can choose exactly how much you’d like to do on your holiday. By providing you with this information, you can decide exactly what else you want to do and see in Africa, and budget accordingly.
The Environment and Responsible Tourism
We believe in showing our clients a real and authentic African experience that also benefits the environment and local people in the counties we travel through. We do this by supporting local community projects and respecting the environment.
By buying our provisions along the way, and by using local operators for optional activities, we support local economies and businesses. We are sensitive to local cultures and our crew are on hand to advise on appropriate behaviour and dress, where relevant.
